ArchivalResource

Gaskell's complete compendium of elegant writing, 1879.

Consists of an engraved envelope that contains what Gaskell called: "a new series of beautiful copy-slips for self-instruction in the counting room, the office, and at the home fireside." The kit was available through the mail for $1.00. The series begins with exercises and a note reminding users to practice daily. Such writing styles as ladies' hand loops, German text, Old English, ladies' hand, and business hand are represented. Also featured are birds, an eagle, and a lion drawn using the "five principle" strokes set forth by Gaskell. The engravings are of Gaskell and the Merchant's Exchange Building.
